Even in the midst of a global pandemic, we can all still achieve the happiness we desire and deserve if we focus on the positive aspects of our lives and learn these simple habits of happy people.

There are many habits to track that can make someone happy and they will vary from person to person but in general, there are a few that are universally accepted to increase happiness.

Here are 7 habits to track to increase your happiness that you can start tracking today!

1. Be Present

How many times have you stopped at the end of a wonderful day and said “wow that was a blur!” It’s easy to rush through our days and forget to stop to be present in the moments along the way.

One of the many habits of happy people is that they are present. Being present means not thinking forward or backways but truly savoring and taking in everything AS it happens instead of looking back at it after and realizing you rushed through your day.

This takes practice. Try stopping a few times a day to make a mental note of the colors, sounds, faces, and scents around you. This will help you to be present and will increase your happiness.

2. Surround Yourself With Uplifting People

Humans need to connect with other humans and even during a global pandemic, we can still find ways to connect with others.

They say you are who you surround yourself with and it’s so true in regards to happiness. If you surround yourself with people who are constantly negative, eventually you will start to be negative as well.

In turn, if you surround yourself with happy, uplifting people, you will feel your world begin to brighten. When you are with someone pay attention to how they make you feel. If they make you happier after you are with them this will increase your happiness.

This is also true of social media. Make note of how you feel when you read posts from the different people you follow. If their posts are not bringing you joy it’s perfectly okay to mute or unfollow them. This will increase your happiness!

3. Practice Prayer or Meditation Daily

People who practice any type of faith, prayer, or mediation are said to be calmer and happier.

No matter what your choice is, spending a few minutes every day being still and calm to focus on what’s important to you will increase your happiness. It will also decrease your stress which is one of the main causes of unhappiness.

4. Sleep 8-10 Hours a Night

Yes, you read that correctly! 8-10 Hours!

I recently watched a documentary that talked about how the brain uses our sleeping times to detox and reset. That is why sleep is so important for our overall well-being and happiness.

I notice a huge change in my happiness when I don’t get enough sleep.

Be sure to get a comfortable pillow and go to bed earlier. It may mean not staying up late to binge-watching Netflix but let me tell you… It is so worth it! Get your sleep and you will notice a huge positive change in your mood.

5. Sweat it Out Daily

I get it.. not everyone likes to work out but hear me out. Happy people sweat every day.

You don’t have to complete a long grueling workout to work up a sweat. Try heading outside and go for a walk, jog, or play with your dog or kids.

As long as you are moving your body every day and sweating you are giving your body a happiness boost!

You should always try to do something that you enjoy and makes you feel good because happiness is the goal here after all.

6. Spend Time in Nature

Nature has a profound effect on humans and can help release tension and help you feel more grounded. According to The Scientist, spending time in nature can improve your mental and physical well-being!

Anytime I am feeling unsettled or unhappy, I head outside and try to just soak in nature around me. I always feel happier afterward!

Even better is to actually go out to nature parks and trails to be fully immersed in nature. Try looking up parks you’ve never been to in your area and make a plan to explore a new one every week!

7. Eat Healthy Food

Eating unhealthy food can make you feel sluggish and foggy. This will decrease your happiness.

Happy people know that food is fuel so they eat healthy food to fuel their bodies to take on their day.

Also, eating healthy food you enjoy will increase your happiness because you will enjoy the taste of what you are eating and who doesn’t love a great meal?!

By using these habits to track you should notice a positive change in your level of happiness. Always remember to listen to your body and take care of your mental needs.
