We all love Pinterest, right?! 🥰 But did you know Pinterest is so much more than social media? Pinterest is actually a very powerful search engine. For bloggers, business owners, and social media influencers Pinterest traffic is a powerful tool!
Pinterest updated their algorithm this year and with that, there’s ONE important thing you can do that will supercharge your Pinterest traffic. Are you ready to find out what it is?
Creating fresh content!
You might be wondering what “fresh content” is so today I’m going to give you all the details you need to know!
Disclosure: I was compensated to create this post, though all opinions and results are my own. These are my personal results, but Tailwind also publishes the Typical Results of Tailwind Members every year, so you can see exactly what the average growth rate looks like for their members.
What is fresh content on Pinterest?
The easiest way to think about it is that new images count as fresh Pins. The Pin can link to a blog post, product listing, or a page on your website that already has Pins linking to that URL; as long as it’s a new image it will count as fresh content.
How different does an image have to be to be considered fresh?
When creating a new fresh pin, it seems that just adding a filter, different text, or moving the background image a few pixels is not sufficient. Instead, you should focus on testing different background images or text overlays.
Focus on creating unique images that are helpful and inspiring to Pinners. Try giving them a new focus, a new angle, or a new story.
One great way to generate several Fresh Pins is to try to create many versions of a Pin for your content by recreating it in meaningful ways. For example, I wrote this blog post “How To Create Instagram Highlight Covers (+ FREE Icons!)”, and made four different Fresh Pins. Notice the different images, fonts, and variations in the text:
How am I implementing fresh pins in my strategy?
Since I learned about the new Pinterest best practices for 2020, I’ve made a few tweaks to my Pinterest strategy and I’ve already seen positive results! 🙌 As you can see, I have an increase in all of my analytics since focusing on fresh content! Find me on Pinterest here!

Here’s what I changed:
➡ Fresh Pins
As I mentioned above the most important step to supercharge Pinterest traffic in 2020 is to create fresh content. I’ve started publishing more blog posts per week and creating 8-10 fresh pins for each blog post. Then I schedule those out over time with Tailwind scheduling.
I always leave at least 2 days between pinning an individual pin to different boards. This is so easy to keep track of in the Tailwind dashboard. I also don’t pin all 8-10 pins in one day for one blog post. I schedule them out over time, making sure to schedule only to relevant personal and group boards.
➡ Group and Personal Boards
Previously, I was pinning to a lot of group boards. The idea is that your pins will be seen by a larger audience and therefore saved and repined. However, now that repins aren’t as much of a priority (more on that next), I only repin to boards that give me high impressions and clicks. (You can check this in your analytics if you have a business account.) You don’t want to pin to group boards that are just a collection of pins that no one ever sees or clicks on.
In addition, I’ve been creating more highly relevant personal boards so I can pin my fresh content to my personal boards that are relevant to my blog post content.
➡ Repins
I’ve stopped repinning my old pins to the same boards. It used to be beneficial to go back and find old pins and repin them. With fresh content being favored, it’s not as beneficial any more so I put more time into creating new fresh pins for old blog posts.
Here’s what stayed the same:
➡ Scheduling with Tailwind
I’m still using Tailwind to schedule all of my pins. Now that fresh content is favored I pin mostly my own content. Repinning other people’s content isn’t as beneficial as it once was because it’s not fresh. Scheduling with Tailwind helps me keep track of when and where I’m sending my pins. Try Tailwind for free, it makes Pinterest so much easier! (*Free trial is based on 100 scheduled Pins)
➡ Using Tailwind Tribes
I’ve still been using Tailwind Tribes as a way to connect with peers who share my interests. As with any of my boards, I am sharing only new, fresh content to Tribes. Although getting repins from tribes isn’t my main focus, it’s still beneficial. Many people enjoy sharing other people’s content because:
- Their audience may enjoy it.
- They want to support another business owner by sharing content.
- They want to save it to read it later themselves!
What is Tailwind doing to help people implement these best practices?
